Storage consolidation

The disadvantage of individual disk subsystems placed in servers is that they cannot handle the storage capacity flexible enough. With fast access block, each server only sees its own self-contained disk subsystem.

Each server needs a separate raid controller, which makes it expensive and uneconomical to operate a large number of servers. The effective solution to the above problems is to switch from storage built into servers to economical, efficient and fault-tolerant central storage solutions.The essence of storage consolidation is that the servers do not use their own unique local disk subsystems to store data, but instead store the data on some external, central, high-availability storage. This storage area is accessed via an FC, ISCSI, FCoE, or infiniband network, so the storage areas can be dynamically and flexibly shared between servers.

Clustered applications are also supported, since the given storage area can be made accessible to several machines with certain special settings.
